Most people only feel the ultrasound probe moving gently across their abdomen. Occasionally, the sonographer may apply slightly firmer pressure to obtain clearer images of the abdominal aorta. If your abdomen is already tender, this may cause mild discomfort for a few moments, but it should not be painful.

There are no injections, needles or recovery time required, and you can continue with your normal activities straight after your appointment.

Preparing for an Aorta Ultrasound is simple but helps ensure the clearest possible images of your abdominal aorta.

You will usually be asked not to eat for around six hours before your appointment, although you should continue drinking water unless advised otherwise. Fasting helps reduce bowel gas, making it easier for the sonographer to clearly see the abdominal aorta.
