FAQs

Do I need a GP referral for a Female Pelvic Ultrasound?

Many patients choose a private Female Pelvic Ultrasound for fast access to diagnostic imaging. In many cases, you can arrange a private scan without first seeing your GP, although a referral may be recommended depending on your symptoms and medical history.

Your GP, consultant or another healthcare professional may also refer you for a Female Pelvic Ultrasound to investigate symptoms such as pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, irregular periods or suspected conditions affecting the uterus or ovaries.

If you are unsure whether a Female Pelvic Ultrasound is the right scan for your symptoms, our team at ScanMe will be happy to advise you and help you arrange an appointment at our Mullingar, Longford or Sligo clinic.

How long does a Female Pelvic Ultrasound take?

A Female Pelvic Ultrasound usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes.

The exact length of the appointment can vary depending on the reason for the scan and whether additional images are needed to fully assess the uterus, ovaries and surrounding pelvic organs. Your sonographer will take the time required to obtain clear, high-quality images, which are then reviewed and reported by a Consultant Radiologist.

Patients attending ScanMe in Mullingar, Longford and Sligo can expect a professional, patient-focused experience from arrival through to the completion of their scan.

Is a Female Pelvic Ultrasound painful?

No. A Female Pelvic Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive and generally painless examination.

Most patients only feel the ultrasound probe moving gently across the lower abdomen. You may experience slight pressure, particularly if your bladder is full, as this helps produce clearer images of the uterus and ovaries. If you are already experiencing pelvic pain or tenderness, there may be some mild discomfort when pressure is applied over the affected area, but this is usually brief.

At ScanMe, our experienced sonographers will ensure you are as comfortable as possible throughout your appointment and will explain each step of the examination as it takes place.

How do I prepare for a Female Pelvic Ultrasound?

Most Female Pelvic Ultrasounds performed at ScanMe are carried out externally over the lower abdomen. To obtain the clearest images of the uterus and ovaries, you will usually be asked to attend with a full bladder.

You will normally be advised to drink around 1 litre of water approximately one hour before your appointment and avoid emptying your bladder until after the scan, unless you are told otherwise when booking. A full bladder helps lift the bowel away from the pelvic organs, allowing clearer ultrasound images to be obtained.

We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, as you may be asked to uncover your lower abdomen during the examination. If you have any questions before your appointment, the ScanMe team will be happy to explain exactly how to prepare.

Is a Female Pelvic Ultrasound the right test for me?

For many gynaecological symptoms, a Female Pelvic Ultrasound is usually the first imaging test recommended because it provides detailed images of the uterus, ovaries and surrounding pelvic organs safely, quickly and without radiation.

A Female Pelvic Ultrasound is commonly used to investigate pelvic pain, heavy or irregular periods, abnormal bleeding, ovarian cysts, fibroids, suspected polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), fertility concerns and many other conditions affecting the female reproductive system. It is also commonly used to monitor known gynaecological conditions over time.

In some cases, further investigations such as an MRI scan, CT scan or additional gynaecological assessment may be recommended if more detailed information is needed. If this is the case, your healthcare professional will explain the next steps and advise on the most appropriate investigation for your individual circumstances.

At ScanMe, we are committed to providing high-quality private Female Pelvic Ultrasound services in Ireland, with clinics in Mullingar, Longford and Sligo, helping patients access expert diagnostic imaging without unnecessary delays.

What happens during a Female Pelvic Ultrasound?

When you arrive at your ScanMe clinic in Mullingar, Longford or Sligo, one of our experienced sonographers will explain the procedure and answer any questions before your Female Pelvic Ultrasound begins.

You will be asked to lie comfortably on an examination couch while ultrasound gel is applied to your lower abdomen. The gel helps the handheld ultrasound probe move smoothly over the skin and allows detailed images of your uterus, ovaries and surrounding pelvic organs to be captured.

Your sonographer will gently move the probe across your lower abdomen while viewing live images on the ultrasound screen. You may occasionally be asked to change position slightly to obtain the best possible views of your pelvic organs. Throughout the examination, your sonographer will explain what they are doing and ensure you remain as comfortable as possible.

A Female Pelvic Ultrasound usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Once the scan is complete, the gel will be wiped away and you can return to your normal daily activities straight away. Your images will then be reviewed and reported by a Consultant Radiologist.

What is a Female Pelvic Ultrasound?

A Female Pelvic Ultrasound, sometimes simply called a pelvic ultrasound, is a safe imaging scan used to examine the uterus, ovaries and surrounding pelvic organs. It is commonly performed to investigate symptoms affecting the female reproductive system and to help diagnose a wide range of gynaecological conditions.

A Female Pelvic Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the pelvic organs. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasound does not use radiation, making it a safe investigation for women of all ages.

At ScanMe, our experienced sonographers perform Female Pelvic Ultrasound scans to assess the health of the uterus and ovaries, helping identify abnormalities that may require monitoring or treatment. Every scan is reviewed and reported by a Consultant Radiologist, giving you confidence in the quality of your care.

When might I need a Female Pelvic Ultrasound?

Your GP or healthcare professional may recommend a Female Pelvic Ultrasound if you are experiencing symptoms affecting your uterus, ovaries or pelvic organs.

Common reasons for having a pelvic ultrasound include:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Heavy periods
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Bleeding between periods or after the menopause
  • Bloating or pelvic pressure
  • Suspected ovarian cysts or fibroids
  • Fertility investigations
  • Monitoring previously diagnosed gynaecological conditions

Many women choose a private Female Pelvic Ultrasound for fast access to diagnostic imaging and reassurance without long waiting times. If your symptoms are persistent or worsening, a pelvic ultrasound can provide valuable information to help guide the next steps in your care.
