Soft Tissue Lump Ultrasound

At ScanMe, our Soft Tissue Ultrasound service provides a safe, non-invasive assessment of lumps, bumps and other soft tissue abnormalities using high-frequency sound waves. This scan is commonly used to investigate new or changing lumps beneath the skin, a lump that has not gone away, swelling, localised pain or unexplained soft tissue abnormalities anywhere on the body. A Soft Tissue Ultrasound can help determine whether a lump is solid or fluid-filled and assess common conditions such as lipomas (fatty lumps), cysts and other soft tissue abnormalities. As ultrasound does not use radiation, it is a safe and effective way to investigate lumps and help determine whether further investigation or treatment may be required. We offer private Soft Tissue Ultrasound appointments at our Mullingar, Longford and Sligo clinics, with all scans performed by experienced sonographers and reported by a Consultant Radiologist.

What can a Soft Tissue Ultrasound detect?

A Soft Tissue Ultrasound can help diagnose a wide range of lumps, bumps and soft tissue abnormalities beneath the skin, including:

  • Lipomas (fatty lumps)
  • Fluid-filled cysts
  • Sebaceous cysts
  • Epidermoid cysts
  • Baker's cysts
  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Abscesses and collections of fluid
  • Haematomas (collections of blood following an injury)
  • Ganglion cysts
  • Scar tissue
  • Foreign bodies beneath the skin, such as splinters or glass
  • Other soft tissue abnormalities

One of the main benefits of a Soft Tissue Ultrasound is that it can determine whether a lump is solid or fluid-filled, while assessing its size, shape, depth and location. This information helps your healthcare professional decide whether the lump is likely to be benign, requires monitoring or needs further investigation or treatment.
